The R&D project “Developing a sustainable management process for end-of-life commercial vehicles” (Alcufer VKE) has started

The OPTISOL consortium has been awarded a non-refundable grant of HUF 914.55 million under the GINOP call for proposals “R&D Competitiveness and Excellence Cooperation” in the framework of the Széchenyi 2020 programme. The investment, with a total budget of more than HUF 1.251 billion, will be used to build two sample halls with the necessary technology and to determine the recycling process with the least environmental impact with the help of expert university and research partners.

The five-member consortium of Alcufer Kft. will develop the most optimal recycling solution for end-of-life commercial road vehicles (trucks and their trailers above 3.5 t and buses) from a road safety and environmental point of view during the two-year period starting from 1 January 2017. At the Szolnok site of Alcufer Kft., Hungary’s leading industrial waste management company, two sample dismantling halls to be built by Dél-Konstrukt Zrt. will be used to dismantle the 10 most frequently state-owned commercial vehicles. The least polluting recycling process will be determined, the structural materials and components of the vehicles will be identified, and the solutions that allow for the highest possible recovery of these materials and components, with a special focus on non-metallic fractions (plastics, rubber, textiles, wood and glass). The expert university and research partners, Bay Zoltán Applied Research Nonprofit Ltd, the University of Miskolc and the University of Pallas Athena will contribute to the development of the most ideal and economical solutions from the logistical, traffic safety and environmental point of view, thus creating the legal, technical and economic basis for the possible extension of the EU and national legislation on car wrecks (Directive 53/2000/EC), which currently applies only to passenger cars and commercial vehicles under 3.5 t, to other categories of commercial road vehicles.
