One of the main areas of focus of the Engineering Division of the Bay Zoltán Research Institute is the tribological analysis of the metal, polymer and technical ceramic contact surfaces of coated and uncoated components of machine parts, drive chains, engines, running gear, car bodies, medical devices, seals, pumps, valves, hydraulic pistons, and railway rolling contact systems, including the examination of lubricant properties, friction conditions, wear and surface fatigue processes, and service life.

The Division’s staff have in-depth knowledge, which, complemented by numerical simulation capabilities, enables the complex research and development of a complete tribological system.

Tribological testing of drivetrain elements/components

Laboratory wear testing of metal, ceramic and plastic contact surfaces for alternating, rotating and arbitrary paths according to real kinetics

Lubricant performance testing, grease and oil EP and wear protection testing

Investigation of the fatigue process of sliding-rolling RCF on contact surfaces, investigation of the scuffing process, service life test

Investigation of stick-slip phenomenon with ball-on-disc assembly to determine the appearance of nuisance acoustic emissions

To establish a validated modelling procedure for the calculation of the failure process of sliding-rolling contact surfaces, including the relevant parts of the manufacturing process.

Analysis and characterisation of lubricant properties (FTIR, GD-OES, Gas chromatography, TAN acid number, viscosity, density, SEM particle analysis)

Sliding wear resistance test with block-on ring assembly

Lubricant film thickness test, with contact electrical resistance measurement

Investigation of frictional conditions, recording of Stribeck curve with temperature measurement

Tribological testing of plain, ball and roller bearings

Numerical simulation of tribological processes, where we can extract additional information for the development of surface coatings and surface treatments that cannot be obtained by measurement.

Numerical simulation of wear, determination of the wear coefficient using inverse engineering method
