Implementing integrated chia and wild mushroom production for a sustainable food chain in Africa (CHIAM)

International cooperation in the field of CHIAM project aims to create sustainable food chains in Africa by developing environmentally friendly technologies and redefining existing agri-food chains to increase resilience, sustainability and circularity. The development of an integrated chia-fallow-mushroom-pork-biogas value chain will contribute to making the African food chain more diverse and resilient, while also counteracting the negative impacts of climate change.

In order to achieve its objectives, the project will implement a number of interlinked and interdisciplinary R&D activities both in Europe and on the European continent, of which the Hungarian partners will participate in the following:

  • development of mushroom cultivation technologies in Africa
  • creating new local foods containing venison mushrooms
  • creation and demonstration of farms using environmentally friendly technologies

The objectives of the CHIAM project are to be achieved through an international, interdisciplinary, demand-driven approach with broad stakeholder involvement. The project will be implemented by an international intersectoral consortium of 7 research institutes and SMEs from 5 countries, from both the European and African continents. The international consortium includes two Hungarian members: Pilze-Nagy Kft. and Bay Zoltán Nonprofit Kft.

Duration of the project: 2021.06.01. – 2024.05.31

Project consortium: 7 partner institutions from 5 countries. Coordinator: Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, Kenya
