Successful establishment of the TRAFFIC RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT NETWORK

“Centre for Higher Education and Industrial Cooperation – Development of Research Infrastructure Establishment of a globally significant automotive research and development centre in Hungary in cooperation between Bay Zoltán Public Nonprofit Ltd., Neumann János University and AVL Hungary Kft.” c.

GINOP-2.3.4-15-2016-00001 projekt

The overall aim of the project was to create an automotive R&D research network involving Kecskemét-Zalaegerszeg-Miskolc sites, and to build an engine and vehicle development knowledge centre. The project was implemented in cooperation between the consortium leader Bay Zoltán Közhasznú Nonprofit Kft., Neumann János University and AVL Hungary Kft. The project was implemented within the framework of the GINOP-2.3.4-15.-2016-00001 programme, funded by the European Union under the Széchenyi 2020 programme, using HUF 5.749 billion in non-reimbursable funding.

The aim of the research and development work carried out in the framework of the project, which ended in September 2023, was to create an automotive R&D research network involving the Kecskemét-Zalaegerszeg-Miskolc sites, and to build an engine and vehicle development knowledge centre. The project was implemented in cooperation with Bay Zoltán Közhasznú Nonprofit Kft. as consortium leader, Neumann János University and AVL Hungary Kft. as consortium members.

An important objective of the project was to develop R&D&I cooperation between research centres and the industrial partner, leading to new scientific results with higher added value, marketable products, services and technologies.

The joint research and development programme has resulted in technology and know-how developments related to industrial research that can also make a significant contribution to future next-generation emission reduction trends. The outputs of the R&D activities have been the development and application of advanced automotive and smart technologies to reduce emissions by improving engine and powertrain performance in the automotive industry, thus contributing to environmental sustainability and efficient natural resource management.

Among other things, the project has developed primary and secondary emission reduction techniques that can be applied to different types of vehicles and power outputs. The wide-ranging project has also involved the development of industrial laser technology, research into the potential of metal foams for automotive applications, the testing of fuel cells, the development and validation of engineering simulation methods for powertrain development, and the development of plant-based biofuels.

As a result of the project, a knowledge base and development centre for fuel cell and electrolysis cell development was built in Kecskemét as a stand-alone technology. In addition, the programme also supported the establishment of a state-of-the-art vehicle simulator laboratory (with a dynamic Driver-in-the Loop simulator) adjacent to the ZalaZONE Automotive Test Track, which will help to make vehicle testing procedures smoother and more cost-effective.

In summary, the project has made a significant contribution to the sector priorities of advanced vehicle and other engineering technologies and sustainable environment, as well as to the strengthening of specialised automotive training.
